Janamejaya asked: When they learnt that the Pāṇḍava-s had been granted permission to leave with their gems, riches and treasures, what was the state of mind of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons?
जनमेजय ने पूछा: जब उन्हें पता चला कि पांडवों को उनके रत्न, धन और खजाने के साथ जाने की अनुमति दे दी गई है, तो धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों की मनःस्थिति क्या थी?
Vaiśampāyana said: O king! When he found out that the intelligent Dhṛtarāṣṭra had given the permission, Duḥśāsana swiftly went to his brother.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! जब उसे पता चला कि बुद्धिमान धृतराष्ट्र ने अनुमति दे दी है, तो दुःशासन तेजी से अपने भाई के पास गया।
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! On arriving before Duryodhana and his advisers, the foremost of the Bhāratas spoke these miserable words,
हे भरत वंश में बैल! दुर्योधन और उसके सलाहकारों के सामने पहुँचकर भरतश्रेष्ठ ने ये दुःख भरे वचन कहे,
"O mahāratha-s! That old man has made us lose everything that we had obtained with great difficulty. He has given those objects to our enemies."
"हे महारथ! उस बूढ़े आदमी ने हमें वह सब कुछ खो दिया है जो हमने बड़ी कठिनाई से प्राप्त किया था। उसने उन वस्तुओं को हमारे दुश्मनों को दे दिया है।"
Then the proud Duryodhana, Karṇa and Saubala Śākuni got together and plotted against the Pāṇḍava-s.
तब अहंकारी दुर्योधन, कर्ण और सौबल शकुनि ने एकजुट होकर पांडवों के खिलाफ साजिश रची।
They went to the intelligent King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Vicitravīrya's son, and spoke to him these conciliatory words.
वे विचित्रवीर्य के पुत्र, बुद्धिमान राजा धृतराष्ट्र के पास गए और उनसे ये सौहार्दपूर्ण शब्द बोले।
Duryodhana said: "O king! Have you not heard what Bṛhaspati, the learned priest of the gods, told Śākra about policy?
दुर्योधन ने कहा: "हे राजा! क्या तुमने नहीं सुना कि देवताओं के विद्वान पुरोहित बृहस्पति ने शंकर को नीति के बारे में क्या बताया था?"

O destroyer of enemies! Enemies must be killed through every means possible, before they cause harm through war or force.
हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! युद्ध या बल के माध्यम से नुकसान पहुंचाने से पहले, दुश्मनों को हर संभव तरीके से मारना चाहिए।

हमें पांडवों से प्राप्त धन के माध्यम से सभी राजाओं को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करनी चाहिए। इसके बाद यदि हम उनसे लड़ेंगे तो हमारे ऊपर क्या विपरीत प्रभाव पड़ सकता है?

If one places angry and venomous snakes that bring destruction on one's back and neck, how can one get rid of them?
यदि कोई विनाश लाने वाले क्रोधी और विषैले सांपों को अपनी पीठ और गर्दन पर रखता है, तो वह उनसे कैसे छुटकारा पा सकता है?
O father! The angry Pāṇḍava-s will ride on chariots and hold their weapons. In their rage, they will destroy us like venomous serpents.
हे पिता! क्रोधित पांडव रथों पर सवार होंगे और अपने हथियार रखेंगे। अपने क्रोध में वे हमें विषैले साँपों की तरह नष्ट कर देंगे।
Arjuna is attired in armour and has grasped his two supreme quivers. He is frequently picking up the Gāṇḍīva, breathing heavily and glancing around.
अर्जुन ने कवच पहन रखा है और उसने अपने दो सर्वोच्च तरकश पकड़ रखे हैं। वह बार-बार गांडीव उठा रहा है, जोर-जोर से सांस ले रहा है और चारों ओर देख रहा है।
We have heard that Vṛkodara has swiftly raised his giant club and is riding on a chariot that has been yoked.
हमने सुना है कि वृकोदर ने तेजी से अपनी विशाल गदा उठाई है और वह एक रथ पर सवार है जो जुए में बंधा हुआ है।

Nākula has his sword and the shield marked with the signs of eight moons. Sahadeva and the king have made their intentions clear through their gestures.
नकुल की तलवार और ढाल पर आठ चंद्रमाओं के चिह्न अंकित हैं। सहदेव और राजा ने इशारों से अपने इरादे स्पष्ट कर दिये हैं।

They have ascended chariots that are stocked with many different kinds of arms. They have whipped up the teams of chariots and are ready to employ armies.
उनके पास चढ़े हुए रथ हैं जो विभिन्न प्रकार के हथियारों से सुसज्जित हैं। उन्होंने रथों की टोलियाँ तैयार कर ली हैं और सेनाओं को नियोजित करने के लिए तैयार हैं।

We have caused them offence and they will not pardon us. Who among them will forgive Draupadī's oppression?
हमने उनका अपमान किया है और वे हमें क्षमा नहीं करेंगे। उनमें से कौन द्रौपदी के अत्याचार को क्षमा करेगा?
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Be fortunate. We must again gamble with the Pāṇḍava-s so as to send them to the forest. In this way, we will be able to bring them under our sway.
हे भरत वंश में बैल! भाग्यशाली बनो. हमें पांडवों को वन में भेजने के लिए उनके साथ फिर से जुआ खेलना होगा। इस तरह हम उन्हें अपने वश में कर सकेंगे।'

ते वा द्वादश वर्षाणि वयं वा द्यूतनिर्जिताः प्रविशेम महारण्यमजिनैः प्रतिवासिताः
Either they or we will be defeated in the gambling with dice and attired in deerskin, will enter the great forest for twelve years.
वे या हम जुए में पासों से हारकर मृगचर्म धारण करके बारह वर्ष के लिये महान वन में प्रवेश करेंगे।
The thirteenth year will have to be spent in an inhabited place, in disguise. If one is recognized, one will again have to go to the forest for twelve years.
तेरहवाँ वर्ष छद्मवेश में किसी निवास स्थान में व्यतीत करना होगा। यदि पहचान लिया गया तो पुनः बारह वर्ष के लिए वन में जाना पड़ेगा।

निवसेम वयं ते वा तथा द्यूतं प्रवर्तताम् अक्षानुप्त्वा पुनर्द्यूतमिदं दीव्यन्तु पाण्डवाः
Either they or we will live here. Therefore, let the gamble begin. Let the dice be thrown again and let the Pāṇḍava-s play.
या तो वे या हम यहां रहेंगे. इसलिए, जुआ शुरू करें. पासा फिर से फेंका जाए और पांडवों को खेलने दिया जाए।

O king! O bull among the Bhārata lineage! This is the most important task for us. This Śākuni is skilled and possesses all the knowledge about the secrets of dice.
हे राजा! हे भरत वंश में बैल! यह हमारे लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कार्य है. यह शकुनि कुशल है और पासे के रहस्यों के बारे में सारा ज्ञान रखता है।

We will be firmly established in the kingdom and will have alliances. We will gather a vast, brave and invincible army and keep it content.
हम राज्य में मजबूती से स्थापित होंगे और गठबंधन करेंगे। हम एक विशाल, वीर और अजेय सेना एकत्रित करेंगे और उसे संतुष्ट रखेंगे।

O king! O scorcher of enemies! If they survive the vow after thirteen years, we will be able to defeat them.Let this find pleasure with you."
हे राजा! हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! यदि वे तेरह वर्षों के बाद प्रतिज्ञा से बचे रहते हैं, तो हम उन्हें हराने में सक्षम होंगे। इसे अपने साथ आनंदित होने दीजिए।''
Dhṛtarāṣṭra replied: "Then immediately bring them back, even if they have gone a long distance away. Let the Pāṇḍava-s return and gamble with the dice again."
धृतराष्ट्र ने उत्तर दिया: "तो तुरंत उन्हें वापस ले आओ, भले ही वे बहुत दूर चले गए हों। पांडवों को वापस आने दो और पासों के साथ फिर से जुआ खेलने दो।"
Vaiśampāyana said: Then Droṇa, Somadatta, the mahāratha Bahlika, Vidūra, Droṇa's son, the valorous son of the vaiśya,

Bhurishrava, Śāntanu's son and mahāratha Vikarṇa collectively said, "Don't have the gamble.Let there be peace."
शांतनु के पुत्र भूरिश्रवा और महारथ विकर्ण ने सामूहिक रूप से कहा, "जुआ मत खेलो। शांति हो।"

अकामानां च सर्वेषां सुहृदामर्थदर्शिनाम् अकरोत्पाण्डवाह्वानं धृतराष्ट्रः सुतप्रियः
But Dhṛtarāṣṭra loved his son and ignored the desires of these well-wishers, all of whom could foresee the consequences. He summoned the Pāṇḍava-s.
लेकिन धृतराष्ट्र अपने पुत्र से प्रेम करते थे और उन्होंने इन शुभचिंतकों की इच्छाओं को नजरअंदाज कर दिया, जिनमें से सभी को परिणाम का अंदाजा था। उन्होंने पांडवों को बुलाया।
O great king! Gāndhārī was always united with dharma. She was miserable because of affection towards her sons and spoke to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of the people.
हे महान राजा! गांधारी सदैव धर्म से जुड़ी रहती थीं। वह अपने पुत्रों के प्रति स्नेह के कारण दुःखी हुई और प्रजा के स्वामी धृतराष्ट्र से बोली।
"When Duryodhana was born, the immensely intelligent Kshatta told us that it would be better to send this destroyer of the lineage to the other world.
"जब दुर्योधन का जन्म हुआ, अत्यंत बुद्धिमान क्षत्रिय ने हमें बताया कि वंश के इस विध्वंसक को दूसरी दुनिया में भेजना बेहतर होगा।

व्यनदज्जातमात्रो हि गोमायुरिव भारत अन्तो नूनं कुलस्यास्य कुरवस्तन्निबोधत
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! As soon as he was born, he howled like a jackal. O Kuru-s! Listen to this. He will be the destroyer of the lineage.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वह पैदा होते ही गीदड़ की तरह चिल्लाने लगा। हे कुरु-स! इस बात सुनो। वह वंश का नाश करने वाला होगा।

मा बालानामशिष्टानामभिमंस्था मतिं प्रभो मा कुलस्य क्षये घोरे कारणं त्वं भविष्यसि
O lord! Do not listen to the views of these wicked ones who are nothing but children. Do not become the cause for the terrible destruction of the lineage.
हे भगवान! इन दुष्टों के विचारों को मत सुनो जो बच्चों के अलावा और कुछ नहीं हैं। वंश के भयंकर विनाश का कारण मत बनो।

बद्धं सेतुं को नु भिन्द्याद्धमेच्छान्तं च पावकम् शमे धृतान्पुनः पार्थान्कोपयेत्को नु भारत
Who will breach a dam that has been constructed? Who will rekindle a dying fire? O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The sons of Pṛthā are now established in peace.
जो बाँध बन गया है उसे कौन तोड़ेगा? बुझती हुई आग को कौन जलाएगा? हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पृथा के पुत्र अब शांति में स्थापित हो गए हैं।

स्मरन्तं त्वामाजमीढ स्मारयिष्याम्यहं पुनः शास्त्रं न शास्ति दुर्बुद्धिं श्रेयसे वेतराय वा
Who would want to anger them? O Ājamīḍha! You remember, but I am reminding you again. Either in good or in evil deeds, the sacred texts cannot instruct those who are evil in intelligence.
कौन उन्हें नाराज़ करना चाहेगा? हे अजमीढ! तुम्हें याद है, लेकिन मैं तुम्हें फिर याद दिला रहा हूं. अच्छे या बुरे कर्मों में, पवित्र ग्रंथ उन लोगों को निर्देश नहीं दे सकते जो बुद्धि में बुरे हैं।

न वै वृद्धो बालमतिर्भवेद्राजन्कथंचन त्वन्नेत्राः सन्तु ते पुत्रा मा त्वां दीर्णाः प्रहासिषुः
O king! Nor will one with the intelligence of a child ever attain the wisdom of age. You should yourself be the leader to your sons. Let them not be torn apart from you.
हे राजा! न ही बच्चे की बुद्धि वाला कोई व्यक्ति कभी उम्र का ज्ञान प्राप्त कर पाएगा। तुम्हें स्वयं अपने पुत्रों का नेता बनना चाहिए। उन्हें तुम से अलग न होने दो।

शमेन धर्मेण परस्य बुद्ध्या; जाता बुद्धिः सास्तु ते मा प्रतीपा प्रध्वंसिनी क्रूरसमाहिता श्री;र्मृदुप्रौढा गच्छति पुत्रपौत्रान्
Let peace, dharma, the counsel of others and natural intelligence be your principles in framing policy. Prosperity built through cruelty is destroyed. If it is gently nurtured, it grows old and passes to sons and grandsons."
नीति निर्धारण में शांति, धर्म, दूसरों की सलाह और प्राकृतिक बुद्धिमत्ता को अपने सिद्धांत बनने दें। क्रूरता से बनी समृद्धि नष्ट हो जाती है। यदि इसका धीरे-धीरे पालन-पोषण किया जाए, तो यह बूढ़ा हो जाता है और बेटों और पोते-पोतियों में चला जाता है।"
Having been thus addressed by Gāndhārī, who had seen the way of dharma, the great king replied, "It is certain that if the destruction of our lineage has come, I will not be able to prevent it.
धर्म का मार्ग देखने वाली गांधारी द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर महान राजा ने उत्तर दिया, "यह निश्चित है कि यदि हमारे वंश का विनाश हुआ है, तो मैं इसे रोक नहीं पाऊंगा।
Let it be as they wish. Let the Pāṇḍava-s return. Let those who are mine gamble again with the Pāṇḍava-s."
जैसा वे चाहते हैं वैसा ही होने दें. पांडवों को वापस आने दो। जो मेरे हैं वे पांडवों के साथ फिर से जुआ खेलें।"
